ASCI banned 373 Ads: So What is ASCI??

  • What happened recently? :-
  • ASCI banned 373 ads including J&J, Amul milk, Wagh Bakri Tea etc.
  • As an advisory issued by Ministry of information & broadcasting (MIB), TV scroll with number of ASCI to be carried on TV channels to make it easy for consumers to complaint against objectionable ad.
  • Consumers can send a simple Watsapp to ASCI @7710012345 to lodge a complaint against an advertisement

What is ASCI?

“The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI)”, is a voluntary & self-regulatory organization created by the advertising industry of India. It is a NGO, established in 1985.

In the year 2007, Cable TV network Rules’ advertising Codes were amended by government of India, as a result of which ads violating the ASCI codes can be banned from TV/media.

Members:

Chairperson: D. Shivakumar

-Board of Governors: 16 members (4 each representing from industries like Advertising, advertising agencies, media & allied professions like market research etc.)

-Customer Complaint council (CCC): 28 members

-Secretariat: 5 members, headed by Secretariat General.

Role:

ASCI ensures that advertisements conform to its Code for Self-Regulation, which requires advertisements to be legal, decent, honest and truthful and not hazardous or harmful while observing fairness in competition. ASCI covers complaints across ALL MEDIA such as Radio, Print, TV, hoardings, SMS, Emails, web-site, product packaging, brochures, promotional material and point of sale material etc.
