Both Bill Gates and Paul Allen were childhood friends and possessed computer skills. They both wanted to start a business to utilize their skills. In 1972, they started their first company “Traf-O-Data” and sold computers that monitored automobile traffic data but “Microsoft” was officially established on 4th April 1975. The name “Microsoft” is a blend of words that were suggested by Paul Allen which was inspired by “Micro-computer Software”. Currently, Microsoft is the world’s most valuable company

- Microsoft was the world’s largest software maker in terms of revenue in 2016.
- In 2018, Microsoft ranked in 30th position in the Fortune 500 list.
- Microsoft acquired Skype Technologies for $8.5 billion in May 2011.
- The company also acquired LinkedIn for $26.2 billion in December 2016.
- It surpassed Apple Inc. in 2018 to become the most valuable publicly-traded company in the world.
- In 2015, Microsoft launched Windows 10 for computers.
- Microsoft launched its flagship product, Xbox One in 2013.

About the Logo:

The company was officially established in 1975 and has modified its logo multiple time since. The first logo was launched in 1975 and the current logo was launched in 2012.

The First logo:
.
The first logo was introduced in 1975 and was designed by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. It was the wordmark in uppercase but the two syllables were placed in two different lines.

Second logo:
.
Microsoft launched its second logo in 1980 and placed all the words in a single line. It was used for couple of years. It had a tagline placed right below the wordmark.

Third logo:
.
The third logo was launched in 1982 with a changed font. The company also removed the tagline and symbolized the alphabet ‘O’ in the middle. The icon was nicknamed as the “blibbet” by the employees.

Fourth logo:
.
In 1987, Microsoft relaunched its logo with a modern font to represent the new era of computing. It was designed by designer Scott Baker, who worked with Microsoft. There was a slash between the “o” and “s” to emphasize the “soft” part of the name and convey motion and speed. This logo was known as the “Pac-man” logo because of the slash.

Current logo:

The current logo was launched by Microsoft in 2012 which symbolizes the actual window with 4 panes. Different colours of each pane represent the product line of the company. Red represents Microsoft Office products, green represents Xbox and gaming likewise blue represents computers and yellow represents hardware.
