.
About The Company:
.
Volkswagen is an automobile manufacturing industry founded in 1937, headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. ‘Volkswagen’ means “people’s car” in the German language. The state of Germany was under the control of Adolf Hitler at that time. The government formed a state-owned automobile company which was operated by the German Labour Front. Adolf Hitler wanted all Germans to own a car. “KdF-Wagen” was the first car manufactured in 1938. It was designed by Austrian automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche. Soon after the production of the car, World War II began, therefore, the production was halted.
The construction of the new factory started in May 1938 in the new town of “Stadt des KdF-Wagens”. Erwin Komenda, chief designer of the Auto Union developed the car body of the prototype, which is known as ‘Beetle’. In 1960, the government of Germany sold 60% of the company stock to the public thus denationalizing it.
The company won the title of “4th most influential car of the century” in 1999 for its Beetle. By 1972, Volkswagen crossed the milestone of worldwide production record of 15 million vehicles set up by the Ford. It was named in the top 25 largest companies in the world in 2011. On May 2009, Porsche and Volkswagen joined together in a merger.
